August 8, Ogden, NY to South Greece, NY 8.5 miles
This was a short day. We had left The White Farm B&B and checked in to a motel not far away to wait out the rain and get some work done. We didn't get back on the water until afternoon when we launched from the golf course and rowed the eight miles to a marina in South Greece.I wanted to get a series of pictures showing how well our boat trailer worked on launching. So here follows a sequence of me launching the boat:
A well designed boat trailer with son Sam's oar boxes
An easy one person job
Done!
We had waited until the rain stopped and it had been pretty clear most of the way but about two miles from the end of this stretch a major downpour hit us. A tour boat went passed us and one of its passengers called over: "I 'm not as wet as you are!" He was right. We had filled up with about three inches of water and everything on us was soaked. We stopped after the shower passed and Heather took pictures of the rainbow it had created while I pumped out the water.
This shower gave us 3" of bilge in the boat! The rainbow was worth it.
When we arrived at Allen's Marina we collected all of our we clothes and put on our dry clothes in the shelter and privacy found between two powerboats stored up on land. Thre seemed to be no services here and most of the boats around us were either burned out or junked.
Pulled out at Allen's marina in South Greece
But it was a safe place and I called my first taxi since we had no ride arranged. We got back to the motel and did some more writing, a very much needed load of laundry and watched Michael Phelps win gold medals.
