August 14, Mays point to Jordan 20.2
Getting ready to launch at Oak Orchard Campground on May's Point
One of many beautiful blossoms that smiled on us all the way across New York State
Cardinal Flowers
Waiting for the gates at Lock 25 to open
Are you ready?
A short drop this time!
Mike, Nicholas, and Kathleen Forker from Michigan watch us go through the lock
One of several abandoned aqueducts along the canal
Note the arches
Great Blue Herons were everywhere along the canal.
Why do people fish? I never saw one being caught!
We had planned to stop here but...
This is what we found!
There must be a way these plants could be harvested and made into fuel or ham!
Yes, we did drink it! Roar!
We left the Microtel in Waterloo early enough to get to the Oak Orchard Campground at Mays Point early enough to get a good start on the day. It was a day with a good feel. We kept up our pace well and found a good quiet place to hide from the rain when it started. For the canopy which I have been so pleased with we need to give some credits: Jack Butterfield for suggesting the three Conestoga type ribs instead of the scheme we were having trouble getting stable, son Sam Coes for the three mahogany cross pieces on which the tent poles are mounted and Heather for sewing the ripstop nylon cover.
We intended to stop in North Weedsport but when we found that the Midway Marina was closed and the entrance choked solid with water chestnuts we had no choice but to tell Chris Hoffman from the Cayuga County Habitat affiliate that we would not be able to meet her there and would have to row another five miles to a ramp at the bridge just before the entrance to Cross Lake. She was a very good sport and agreed to go there.
At this point we decided we needed a boost of energy to make it that far and we brought out the little energy boosters we had picked up at the grocery store in Weedsport. Wow! Within minutes after chugging these we were growling and the stroke went up to 20 or so! It really did give me a boost of energy and we beat Chris to the ramp at the Cross Lake Boat Club!
It was late and we had kept Chris for several hours longer than anticipated. I invited her to have dinner with us. She accepted and we went to Devaney’s near Weedsport where the crowd indicated that we had chosen a good place. Chris and Heather immediately discovered many common interests and struck up a long conversation.
