I feel a bit of guilt in taking time to pursue a personal interest while leaving behind so many things I could be doing to help others. For this reason it has occurred to me that we should dedicate part of our time on this trip to publicizing a cause that I am very proud of Heather for becoming involved in.

Damien House is a hospital in Guayaquil, Ecuador that she has visited twice while helping with medical missions her brother has arranged. Last spring she was honored to be asked to serve on the Damien House Board of Directors. Damien House offers both a haven and a cure for people with Hanson’s Disease (Leprosy) in this poor country where medical attention is rare and lepers are cast out as they were in the rest of the world thousands of years ago when there was no cure. Go to their website at www.damienhouse.org for more information.

The stories of the good works of this place have caused us both to look for ways to assist. Therefore, we wish to do two things during our trip. First, we are looking for opportunities to do short presentations explaining the cause at meetings of interested people at various points along the way. Heather has pictures and a presentation she improves on every repetition. Second, we hope to use our miles of rowing to raise some monetary assistance for Damien House. I will feel less guilty if I know that I have caused a few pennies to be donated to the cause as each mile passes. So we will be looking for pledges per mile. This mileage will be based on the number of miles we row measured by the sum of straight-line distances on the chart between stopping places. I estimate we might be able to cover about 200-300 this trip if we are lucky with the winds and weather.
