January 7, 2003 We got away from old avocado early in the morning and drove quite a ways before feeling hungry for breakfast. By then, of course, a restaurant was hard to find but we lucked upon the Little Italy which served a great breakfast that turned out to be our lunch as well.
Our boat was to have been delivered to Murray Marine on Stock Island, a part of Key West by Jan. 7. We drove right past Murray Marine looking for it on the wrong side of the road and found ourselves going downtown into Key West where we had decided to find a room where we could assemble the RoWings. Heather had noticed a coupon in one of those free little magazines she picked up at the Little Italy advertising a $58.00 room at the Blue Sky Inn. While cruising the shoreline on the south end of Key West for a beach to launch from, she noticed a sign on the Blue Sky Inn. We pulled in and a very nice young woman confirmed that she had such a room and that it was in a newly renovated conch house at 817 Catherine St. She gave us the key and suggested we go and look at it. It was perfect. So we went and picked up the boat, stopped to pick up the tools we needed for assembly and ended up getting a long list of other things we just had to have at our favorite toy store, West Marine. By the time we got to our suite at the conch house it was nearly six and we had lots of work to do. We had determined that we could launch from the beach near the marker for the southernmost point in the USA. Heather called Papa John’s and a pizza was delivered a few minutes later as I was unpacking the box of the first Piantedosi RoWing or what I would rather refer to as the raw materials to make one. It was 6:30! I had hoped to be on the water! The first one was finished at 10:00. Yes, there had been a learning curve. I finished the second at about 11:30 and feel now that I could assemble one in less than an hour! Experiential education works. We were asleep by midnight in a comfortable king sized bed in a tastefully decorated room. My negative preconception of Key West was dispelled.
